5 lenses you want for FX

Picture
Regarding last time’s DX lens choices, this time, we have stepped into the FX territory and wrote a review on which 5 FX lenses we would recommend from the Nikon range.

Again, the choices include wide angle, mid range, and telephoto lenses, but a warning, prepare to spend a fortune since FX lenses are often relatively more expensive than other lenses, especially the zoom lenses.

1. Nikon 16-35mm f/4G VR
Instead of the beastly 14-24mm f/2.8G, we recommend this slightly less wide, but more versatile Nikon 16-35mm lens, which features a constant aperture of f/4, VR II, and Nano Crystal coating. The biggest advantage over the 14-24mm lens is of course, the ability to attach from mounted filters. The 14-24mm lens has a vulnerable spherical front element which pokes out, which is more prone to scratches. However, do note that the 14-24mm lens is the best wide angle lens you can get in terms of image quality.

2. Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G
The 24-70mm lens will be the obvious choice for every FX users, especially when you are capable of zooming from a decent wide angle to moderate telephoto. The lens is of great quality no matter its excellent build quality or its top of its class image quality. By featuring a constant f/2.8 aperture, low light photography is made possible, and gives you good subject isolation when zoomed into 70mm for portrait photography.

3. Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G VR II
This beast really costs a lot for anyone, but this will be the only telephoto zoom lens you will want to carry with you forever. With a focal length of 70-200mm, a constant aperture of f/2.8 and VR II, this is the best telephoto zoom lens you can get.. It is a heavy piece of glass, but the image quality you get from this is superb.

4. Nikon 85mm f/1.4G
To give this lens a name, we have named it the ‘dedicated creamy portrait lens’ or the ‘fast moderate telephoto lens’. With an aperture of f/1.4, you can really give your portraits a pleasing look with creamy bokeh. The depth of field is so little that your subjects hair will be slightly out of focus if you only in on the eye. When you stop the lens down from f/2.8 onwards, you will find yourself using the best lens ever. If you want some moderate telephoto shots for sports or in low light, this is also the obvious choice, again, because of its f/1.4 maximum aperture.

5. Nikon 105mm f/2.8G VR Macro
The last recommendation will have to be a macro lens. Now that you have the capability of taking wide, normal and telephoto shots, macro photography will be another creative style of photography to play with. However, this lens will be only for people who like taking macro shots, portraits, or general telephoto. If you want a cheaper alternative, you can consider the Nikon 60mm f/2.8G Macro, but the image quality will not be as superior, and you may miss the VR which is available on the 105mm Macro.

And of course, if you also want references from third party manufacturers, here are some cheaper alternatives:

1. Nikon 16-35mm f/4G VR
2. Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM
3. Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM II
4. Nikon 85mm f/1.4D
5. Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro
