AF-S Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED N

This f/2.8 lens is a fast aperture, high-performance, ultra-wide-angle zoom optimized for FX and DX format sensors. It has used Nikon's enhanced optical formulas engineered to produce exceptional sharpness, contrast and colour, rendering outstanding image integrity. 2 Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements and PGM aspherical lenses control chromatic aberrations are included in order to enhance image sharpness and contrast even at the widest aperture settings. The exclusive Nano Crystal Coat (N) further reduces ghosting and flare for even greater image clarity. As a plus, it has Internal Focusing (IF) which provides fast and quiet AF without changing the length of the lens, retaining subject-working distance through the focus range. Introducing the M/A focus mode to Nikon lenses, this enables the photographer to switch between AF and MF.

Usefulness: FX: ★★★★☆    DX: ★★☆☆☆

Optics and image quality:
This is a ture legendary lens. Sharp from corner to corner on FX, creating contrasty, low-distortion, and near none vignetting. There were never such a zoom lens which gave this kind of image quality. At 14mm, it is also reported to be sharper than the 14mm f/2.8, which is a prime ultra wide angle lens.

Ergonomics & build:
Paying this price for a lens, you surely want this lens to be built solidly, and it is built solidly. Built quality is like the 24-70mm f/2.8 and the 70-200mm f/2.8. As with most wide angle lenses, the huge front element pokes out, and therefore no filter threads for any photographers who like using filters. As an AF-S lens, a SWM is intergrated into the lens, which gives near silent AF, and even works on crippled DSLRs, like the D3000, D3100, D5000....Full time manual focus override is also possible on this lens, which always comes in handly if the lens focuses on the wrong thing, which hardly does. Rubber gasket is also introduced at the mount of the lens, which acts as a weather sealing when mounted onto the camera. This is a heavy lens, but balances quite well with the D3 family, or with the D300, D300s and the D700 gripped.

Usefulness:
Always useful for landscape photographers who like ultra wide angle perspective and the ability to zoom, but still maintain the high image quality. However, some complain that the zoom range is too limited to only use it for ultra wide angle shots, and have to frequently change lenses when shooting at an event. If you are the kind of person who needs variable and useful focal length, get the slower 16-35mm f/4 instead. But if you can bear with the limited zoom, get this while you still can.
