Really, the world's best normal zoom for FX....

AF-S Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED-IF N
AF-S Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED-IF N
AF-S Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED-IF N

Fast constant aperture of f/2.8, high performance wide-angle to semi-telephoto zoom and optimized for FX and DX format sensors makes this a must-have lens in the bag for serious amateur and professional photographers. It features Nikon’s exclusive ED Glass, Nano Crystal Coat and Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass in order to produce exceptional sharpness, contrast and colour, rendering outstanding image integrity.

With its SWM inside the lens, its AF speed is lighting fast, only about 0.3 seconds focusing from infinity to 0.38m (closet), then back to infinity. With Nikon's M/A mode, you can fine-tune the AF with only a slight touch of the focus ring, turning it into MF mode.

The 24-70mm lens is built ruggedly with professional-grade dust and moisture resistance (weather sealing). This makes this lens workable in harsh environments.

Usefulness: FX: ★★★★★    DX: ★★★★☆

Optics and image quality:
Having the rating of 5 out of 5, you will expect super image quality when you have this lens mounted onto your camera, even on FX format, which the lens is made for. The sharpness of the lens is great in the middle of the frame, and even to the corners, however some minimal vignetting comes in at about 24mm at f/2.8. Images are sharp all the way from 24mm to 70mm, no sign of any softness as you zoom into the telephoto end. Distortion is also not significant in daily use, however, it is still present. These can be corrected easily in post-processing softwares. Chromatic aberrations are nearly none on this lens, which is not a surprise for a lens this price and this level. Bokeh performance when shot at f/2.8 is pleasant, with smooth transitions. At distant backgrounds, bokeh turns into little bokeh balls.

Ergonomics & build:
The lens is built like a weapon to go onto a war. The lens barrel is made out of metal, and finished in Nikon's famous G lenses black finish, same as the 70-200. Weather sealing is also included at the mount of this lens, which keeps out dust and moisture from entering into the camera body. As an AF-S lens, there is full-time manual focus override, where the user can change the focus if the lens focuses on the wrong subject. Zoom range is evenly and proportionally spaced out, so you won't find the zoom crammed in too much.

Usefulness:
With a range of 24mm to 70mm, that stands for wide-angle to moderate telephoto, with an aperture of f/2.8. On a FX camera, you will find yourselve wanting only this lens, and have this lens mounted onto your camera almost the whole time. However, on DX format, it is not really sensible to get this lens unless you will want to upgrade to FX, since the crop factor of 1.5x will lead you into a situation of not wide enough, and not much telephoto'. Instead, get the DX format only 17-55mm f/2.8.
