Canon 550D

Canon 550D (with kit lens: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II)
Canon 550D (with kit lens: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II)
Having the name 'baby-7D', you can expect high quality stuff out of this camera.

Megapixels

The 550D takes a 18MP CMOS APS-C size sensor, and this gives you a 1.6x crop (Nikon 1.5x, better). Surprisingly, the sensor chip of this camera is the same as the one in the Canon 7D. Again, the megapixel count does not matter that much.

Frames per second

3.7 frames per seond. General daily use, not really for sports. Weddings..great! The 550D has a somewhat slower power-up time than the Nikon D90. Not a big deal, just depends on the photography you do.

HD video feature

Please navigate away immediately if you don't like figures, or else, don't get dumbfounded.

The video feature can be varied at a number of resolutions and frame rates for different applications. It can capture 1920 x 1080 Full HD video at 24fps, 25fps or 30fps, and up to 4GB per clip. Other recording sizes include HD at 1280 x 720 at 50fps and 60fps. There are many other formats, but I am not bothered to do free advertisement for Canon! A built-in microphone is available for simple mono recording, but if you want to be pro, buy an external microphone and plug it into the microphone jack on the camera body.

However, to disappoint you with bad news (sort of), only a maximum of 5 minutes can be used to record full HD videos, which may not be a problem if you edit them carefully.

ISO sensitivity

ISO 100 to 6400, and extendable to ISO 12800. Personnally, I will normally shoot at ISO 200, as a too low ISO will reduce dynamic range, and too high will result in a noisy image. However, the combines DIGIC 4 image processor reduces the amount of noise greatly.

LCD screen

Wide 3-inch, 1.04 million dot LCD. NO WAY!

AF system

Only 9 point AF system. Nikon AF system is much advanced compared to Canon.

Weight

530g, with memory card and battery.

Flash

Built-in flash. Nothing like Nikon sophisticated CLS system. Too bad!

User-friendliness

You may at first find it more easy-to-use than Nikon, but not really. Most features you will want to change is securely placed in their messy menus. Really depends on what you like. For me, Nikon has a better layout (see Nikon menu description).

Card compatibility

SD and SDXS. Up to 34 JPEGs and 6 RAWs at single burst.

Suggested lenses

EF Canon 35mm f/2

EF Canon 35mm f/2
Fast 35mm wide-angle lens. With a minimum focusing distance of only 0.8 ft. (25cm), you can approach the subject closer and still obtain a more natural wide-angle effect. You can even obtain good background blur for portraits, but look out for distortion.

EF Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

EF Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
This easy-to-use standard zoom lens can cover a large zoom area ranging from 24mm wide-angle to 105mm portrait-length telephoto, and its Image Stabilizer Technology steadies camera shake up to three stops. Constructed with one Super-UD glass element and three aspherical lenses, this lens minimizes chromatic aberration and distortion. The result is excellent picture quality, even at wide apertures. Canon's ring-type USM gives silent but quick AF, along with full-time manual focus. Moreover, with dust- and moisture-resistant construction, this is a durable yet sophisticated lens that meets the demands of advanced amateur photographers and professional photographers.

Suggested flash

Canon 430EX II

Canon 430EX II
Bringing a new level of versatility and capability to flash photography, the 430EX II features a powerful flash output with a fast recycling time in a small size. A simple one-touch mechanism makes it easy to attach or detach the 430EX II from the camera. Flash controls are set through the camera's LCD screen. The Speedlite 430EX II is also quieter, recycle time is 20% faster as compared to the 430EX, and since it is compatible with Canon's wireless E-TTL, it can be used as a slave unit.
