The Nikon D90 is an advanced entry-level DSLR. Despite its small sized and light weight body, it is very capable of taking sharp and clean pictures.

Megapixels

The D90 takes a 12.3MP CMOS APS-C size sensor, meaning it gives you a 1.5x crop. The EXPEED chip in the sensor is an extra bonus, featuring high-speed photo saving. Anyway, the megapixel count does not matter that much.

Frames per second

The 4.5 frames per seond makes this a suitable camera for sports, wedding, and daily-usage camera. What else, its 0.15s power-up time makes this a ready-to-use camera out of the bag.

HD video feature

With a flick of a fingertip, you are not in live-view. And with a gentle press on the OK button, the video recording starts. The D90 is able the shoot sound video at 24fps and up to 720p HD! Unpleasing news it that AF in live-view or video mode is slow as turtle, better off using manual focus.

Well, I will be honest. The video feature on DSLR do not mean much. Don't make it a priority when purchasing a DSLR. Even if you are obsessed with video, go with Canon for that. For imaging, go with Nikon.

ISO sensitivity

ISO 200 to 3200, and extendable to ISO 100 (LO 1) and ISO 6400 (HIGH 1). Personnally, I will normally shoot at ISO 200, as a too low ISO will reduce dynamic range, and too high will result in a noisy image.

LCD screen

The attractive 3-inch 921000 dot LCD screen makes your reviewing a no-worry experience.

AF system

11 point AF system. Fast and accurate.

Weight

620g without battery
703g with battery

Flash

Built-in flash. Not for you to use it as a fill-in, but as a commader in Nikon CLS system.

User-friendliness

At the first glance, it may seen a difficult camera to use, due to its comprehensive layout of buttons. But once you get used to it, you will be happy to press dedicated buttons on the camera body, than to mess around with menus, like the Canon cameras.

Card compatibility

SD and SDHC. Slide open card door.

Suggested flash

Nikon SB-600

Nikon SB-600
With its i-TTL system built into the flash, it is optimized for use with Nikon's Creative Lighting System (CLS), which you will love, for sure! Its flash zoom ranges from 24mm to 85mm, which is expandable to 14mm with the built-in wide-flash diffuser.

Not everyone can afford softboxes, so the flash head is able to rotate 270° degrees and tilt 90° degrees to help reduce background shadows and allow for creative light control when using as a bounce flash.

Lastly, its big and clear LCD screen at the back of the flash makes changing settings very accessible.
