Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 DX

This is an ultra-wide angle lens with a fast f/2.8 aperture for better photography in low-light situations. Many photographers consider having an f/2.8 aperture a must for any lens in their camera bag.

This 11-16mm f/2.8 lens is based on the award-winning optical design of the Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X PRO (AT-X 124 PRO DX) lens, but this 11-16mm f/2.8 has a slightly shorter zoom range to maintain optical quality at wide apertures.

Optics and image quality:
Images that this lens produce are sharp, even if you move towards the edges of the frame, which is quite surprising for wide angle lenses. After testing this lens, I found out that vignetting is present in the photos, but not significant for you to notice without zooming in to 100% viewing the photo. Barrel distortions are minimal on this lens compared to most other wide angle lenses. To remove the slightest distortions, do it in post-processing programs. They are quite easy to correct.

Ergonomics & build:
The 11-16 is Tokina's PRO line series of lenses, like Nikon's gold rim, and Sigma's EX line. Althought the outer barrel is made of plastic, but the plastic is indeed some expensive and solid ones. The weight of the lens is well balanced on most DX format cameras. There is a 77mm filter thread at the front, so those of you who like to use filters may go ahead and use them as you like.

Usefulness:
Taking on only the zoom range of 11-16mm, most people will find the zoom very limited, like a prime lens more than a zoom one, but aside from that, very useful. And I do mean very useful. Converting this 11-16mm lens into normal 35mm format cameras FOV, you get about 16-24mm, which is pretty wide compared to your 18-55 kit lens (FOV 28-80mm) or compared to your digital compacts (FOV of usually 28-135, and 24-135 on more expensive ones). A must buy for people who love landscapes and group shots.
